Eimskip and Ernst Russ Order Two Next Generation Containerships ElbFeeder, a joint venture between Iceland's Eimskip and Germany's Ernst Russ, has signed a contract with China Merchants Jin Ling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co. Ltd. for the construction of two 2,280 TEU containerships. The signing took place on 04 September 2025 in Hamburg. The vessels, scheduled for delivery in the latter half of 2028, will bolster the fleet to nine vessels and include options for two more. These new ships feature a dual-fuel propulsion system designed for LNG and methanol, ensuring environmental compliance and efficiency on the North Atlantic routes. The vessels will be deployed along Eimskip's Blue Line connecting Reykjavik and Rotterdam with a 10-year time-charter agreement. Designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute, they include enhanced hull structures for better hydrodynamic performance. This order represents the first newbuild investment for Ernst Russ in decades and highlights the strategic importance of modernizing the fleet. The vessels' construction will be financed through a blend of equity and debt to maintain a balanced financial framework.
