Damen Shipyards Group has secured a  contract to deliver a Stan Tug 1706 ICE to the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation in Canada. The tug, equipped for ice-breaking, is pivotal for maintaining the community's ferry service during harsh winter months, enhancing connectivity and mobility for the First Nation on Lake Simcoe.
The community's interest in the Stan Tug 1706 ICE was piqued by witnessing its operation in nearby regions. This new acquisition underscores the importance of reliable transportation in regions prone to severe winter conditions, providing a crucial link for supplies and people.
Construction of the vessel's hull will occur in Poland, with final outfitting in the Netherlands. Damen plans to deliver the tug to Salaberry-de-Valleyfield by September 2026, ensuring the vessel's arrival before the St. Lawrence Seaway closes. The route continues to Lake Simcoe through the Trent-Severn Waterway.
In a nod to cultural significance, the tug will be named in Anishinaabemowin by a community elder, adding a layer of heritage and identity. Damen's Sales Manager Americas, Dominique Smit, expressed pride in supporting the community, emphasizing the vessel's role in enhancing connectivity and establishing a lasting partnership.
