On August 15th, Seaspan, the world’s largest independent container ship owner, announced a major fleet expansion by ordering 12 new 9,000 TEU container ships from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). These vessels, powered by traditional fuel systems, are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2029. The deal, settled in RMB, highlights growing international partnerships and the globalization of China's maritime industry. Including these latest orders, Seaspan now has a total of 67 new ships under construction in China, emphasizing its commitment to both fleet growth and environmental compliance. Seaspan’s expansion is supported by recent financial deals and a new joint venture focusing on green energy retrofits, positioning the company at the forefront of the industry’s decarbonization efforts.
