The construction of India’s first indigenous Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) for the Indian Coast Guard has commenced at the Goa Shipyard. This development marks a significant milestone in India's defense manufacturing capabilities, as the ACVs are indigenously built and designed specifically for coastal security tasks. The new hovercraft, based on Griffon Hoverwork designs, will enhance the Coast Guard's operational capabilities. These ACVs promise higher speed, better tactical versatility, and the ability to operate efficiently in shallow waters, making them ideal for patrolling, interdiction, and search and rescue operations along India's extensive maritime borders. The commencement ceremony took place at Chowgule & Company Pvt. Ltd. in Goa, attended by high-ranking officials, including the Inspector General from the Indian Coast Guard. The project is part of a contract with the Ministry of Defence for six ACVs, emphasizing the country's focus on achieving operational self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted that India's indigenous defense production has reached unprecedented levels, with a production value of Rs 1.46 lakh crore and exports soaring to Rs 24,000 crore in the 2024-25 period. He underscored the pivotal role of initiatives like Make-in-India in bolstering security, showcasing India's power to advance its defense capabilities independently.
