Van Oord Orders New Methanol-Powered Subsea Rock Installation Vessels

The new vessels will feature a maximum loading capacity of 35,000 tonnes and will be integrated with a DP-2 dynamic positioning system, providing precise navigation even amid challenging environmental conditions such as rough seas and strong currents. This capability is particularly beneficial for long-distance projects, as it reduces the necessity for multiple trips, thereby lowering both emissions and costs. According to Maurits den Broeder, Managing Director of Offshore Energy at Van Oord , these investments align with the company’s strategy for advancing in the energy transition, enhancing energy security and independence, and addressing the critical need for reliable underwater infrastructure. The vessels reflect Van Oord 's focus on innovation, safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency. In line with sustainability goals, the vessels will incorporate environmentally friendly technological features such as engines capable of running on biofuel and methanol, a DC-grid system with significant battery storage, and an energy-efficient hull and rock handling design. This design promises a reduction in CO₂ emissions, aligning with Van Oord 's net-zero commitments. Van Oord currently operates three other Subsea Rock Installation vessels: Stornes, Nordnes, and Bravenes.
