Viking has unveiled plans for the construction of the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, in collaboration with Fincantieri. This groundbreaking vessel will feature a hybrid propulsion system based on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, enabling it to operate with zero emissions. The Viking Libra is currently being built at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard and is slated for delivery in late 2026. In addition to the Viking Libra, Viking has also announced the upcoming launch of the Viking Astrea in 2027, which will share the same pioneering technology. These developments underscore the company's commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. The ship's state-of-the-art propulsion system, supported by Isotta Fraschini Motori, is capable of generating up to six megawatts of power, ensuring efficient operations while exploring ecologically sensitive areas. Looking ahead, Viking and Fincantieri are strengthening their partnership with a signed contract for two more ocean-going ships set for delivery in 2031, further reinforcing their shared vision for a sustainable future. The projections for Viking include expanding their capacity to 110 river ships by 2028 and 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031. This expansion reflects the company's strategic growth plan and its commitment to environmental responsibility across its fleet.
