Remontowa Shipbuilding, situated in Gdańsk, Poland, has secured a landmark contract to construct seven electric ferries for the Scottish company CalMac. This deal represents the shipyard's largest order to date, both in terms of the number of vessels and the overall value. The contract was won amidst competition from shipyards in the Netherlands, Turkey, and the UK. The project includes building six ferries, each with a capacity for 150 passengers and 24 cars, and a seventh ferry that will accommodate 250 passengers and 16 cars. The first ferry is anticipated for delivery by the third quarter of 2027, with the entire fleet set to be completed by the first quarter of 2029. This is not the first collaboration between Remontowa Shipbuilding and CalMac; the Polish shipyard previously delivered three ferries to the company between 2005 and 2011. These vessels were intended to support passenger and car traffic in key areas of Scotland, specifically around Glasgow and the Western Isles archipelago. The shipyard emphasizes that this returning business validates its capabilities and innovative approach in shipbuilding. Poland's shipbuilding industry, with historical roots going back to the Middle Ages, flourished during the 20th century, especially during the 1960s and 1970s. Although its global market share has declined, shipbuilding remains a critical component of Poland's maritime economy, now more focused on repair and maintenance services.
