The U.S. Navy has awarded a $28.3 million contract modification to Conrad Shipyard for the design and construction of an additional yard repair, berthing, and messing (YRBM) barge. This contract modification, which could potentially increase to $59.9 million, is pivotal for bolstering the Navy's operational capabilities.
Construction for this project will be conducted at Conrad Shipyard's Amelia, Louisiana facility, with an expected completion date of March 2027. The financing for the contract comes from the Navy’s fiscal year 2024 shipbuilding and conversion budget. This contract was awarded under a sole-source provision, citing a single available provider as mandated by 10 U.S. Code 3204(b)(B). The Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., will oversee the project's execution.
Previously, Conrad Shipyard delivered its first YRBM barge, _YRBM 57_, to the Navy in October 2024. This barge, stationed in Japan, supports naval operations by offering well-equipped facilities for sailors. It is characterized by a full load draft of 6'8", an air draft of 60'11", and a displacement of 1,270 tons. The barge provides accommodation for 199 mixed-gender crew members and dining capacity for 300 personnel, along with various functional amenities.
The design of the YRBMs reflects a comprehensive approach to onboard living, including a 12-person officers’ mess, a chief petty officer mess for 12, and an enlisted mess for 60. Additional facilities comprise medical spaces, classrooms, laundry areas, and multiple lounges. This thoughtful design ensures that the barge fully meets the diverse needs of its naval occupants.
