Cammell Laird shipyard has been appointed by the UK government to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the future market for UK-built ships designed for offshore wind operations. This initiative is a collaboration between the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, the National Shipbuilding Office, and the Crown Estate. It is geared towards enhancing the UK's understanding and capability in vessel manufacturing to support the burgeoning offshore wind sector. The global offshore wind capacity is projected to exceed 850GW by 2050, necessitating a significant expansion in the production of Service Operation Vessels (SOVs). These vessels serve as mobile bases for efficient servicing and maintenance of offshore wind farms—an essential aspect of the sector's growth. ORE Catapult's analysis forecasts the deployment of hundreds of SOVs worldwide, unlocking a global market valued at nearly $45.3 billion through 2050. Lauren Hadnum, Clean Maritime Manager at ORE Catapult, emphasized the need for a collaborative industry-government strategy to bolster UK shipbuilding for this critical sector. Additionally, APCL Cammell Laird, one of the UK's leading shipbuilders, expressed commitment to constructing a robust business case for sustainable shipbuilding.
