Uudenkaupungin Työvene, a subsidiary of Summa Defence, along with Baltic Workboats, has secured a significant shipbuilding contract valued at 110 million euros with the Belgian government. This project marks a substantial development in the maritime sector, as announced in a recent company release. The two companies are part of a joint venture known as Nordic Yards Group, which will be responsible for designing and constructing an 80-meter pilot station vessel. This environmentally friendly vessel is set to be built for the Belgian state company DAB Vloot. The agreement allows for the option of an additional vessel, and the full project duration is expected to span 42 months. The vessel is engineered to operate in the North Sea, featuring a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system aimed at reducing environmental impact. It incorporates six Volvo Penta diesel generators and a battery bank, managed by an intelligent control system to optimize energy usage and decrease CO2 emissions. Environmental sustainability is a key aspect of this innovative ship, which can be upgraded to run on methanol fuel. Designed to withstand harsh conditions, the vessel will support smaller pilot boats and accommodate 20 crew members and 12 pilots with modern amenities. This initiative reflects a joint effort by Uudenkaupungin Työvene, based in Finland, and Baltic Workboats, from Estonia, to advance eco-friendly maritime technology through their partnership, Nordic Yards Group.
