Disney Cruise Line is charting a new course by opting for smaller ships to enhance destination flexibility, a move that contrasts with competitors like Royal Caribbean, which have been building increasingly larger vessels. Disney plans to introduce three new ships in 2029, 2030, and 2031, each approximately 100,000 tons and capable of carrying about 3,000 passengers. This size is notably smaller than their Disney Wish class ships, which are 144,000 tons and hold 4,000 passengers. However, these new ships will still be 20% larger than Disney's original Magic and Wonder ships. The decision to build smaller ships is driven by Disney Cruise Line's desire to offer a broader range of destination choices and experiences for its guests. Thomas Mazloum, president of Disney Signature Experiences, emphasized the importance of variety in vacation options and accessing more global ports. Some speculate that these new additions might eventually replace the aging Magic and Wonder ships. By 2031, Disney will expand its fleet from six to thirteen ships. Current ships like the Dream, Fantasy, Wish, and Treasure, and upcoming vessels such as the Adventure and Destiny, reflect Disney's continued investment in innovative and environmentally-friendly cruise experiences. The new ship class debuting in 2029 will feature advanced technology and eco-friendly designs. These vessels will employ energy-efficient systems, next-generation power sources, and the ability to operate on various renewable fuels, further supporting Disney's environmental goals.
