Alicat Workboats has announced the securing of a significant order to supply two offshore wind workboats to a client in Turkey. This £2 million contract, supported by the UK Export Finance agency, highlights the UK shipbuilder's expanding global footprint in renewable energy sectors. The two aluminum workboats will be constructed at Alicat Workboats' facility in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Once completed, these vessels will be transported to Turkey, where they will play a crucial role in the installation and maintenance operations for a wind farm. The company, which maintains a workforce of 35, managed to secure the contract with financial backing from Virgin Money, underpinned by a guarantee from UKEF. Simon Coote, the general manager, credited the support from these organizations as instrumental in securing this deal, which ensures a year’s worth of secured work and sustains local jobs. This development arrives at a challenging time for the UK's shipbuilding industry. Recently, major shipbuilder Harland & Wolff narrowly avoided financial collapse, underscoring the sector’s volatility. The UK government praises the Alicat Workboats deal as evidence of international demand for British expertise in marine renewables.
