Karachi Shipyard Resumes Commercial Shipbuilding After Four Decades

Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) is set to construct its first large commercial vessel in over 40 years, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s maritime sector. The project, supported by the Pakistan Navy, Karachi Shipyard, and Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), involves the production of an 1100 TEU container ship, capable of carrying 1,100 twenty-foot containers.

This initiative, valued at $24.57 million, comes as part of broader efforts by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to revitalize the country’s maritime industry and promote the “blue economy.” The contract is expected to reduce shipbuilding costs compared to international prices, minimizing dependence on foreign shipping companies and saving valuable foreign exchange.

The project had been on hold for nine months but has now been revived, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its shipbuilding capabilities. The last commercial vessel constructed at Karachi Shipyard was completed in the 1970s.This development underscores the growing emphasis on self-reliance and economic sustainability. By bolstering the shipbuilding sector, Pakistan aims to enhance its maritime infrastructure and position itself as a competitive player in regional trade and logistics.
